Wallpen builds direct to wall printer

The German company Wallpen has developed a mobile, large format vertical UV wall printer that can print graphics direct to walls and vertical surfaces, up to almost four meters high.

It can print to various substrates including plaster, wallpaper, tiles, and concrete. Likely applications include shopping malls and hospitals as well as creating displays on museum or office corridor walls. It should appeal to signmakers, interior designers, and ad agencies.

This vertical UV wall printer can cover up to four square meters per hour at a resolution of 370 x 600dpi. It was developed over two years and is underpinned by 15 patents. It uses a four-color Xaar 128 print bar fitted to a lightweight arm. During printing, the system scans across the surface with a laser to adjust the print arm to take into account any imperfections and undulations on the surface being printed.

Andreas Schmidt, Wallpen’s managing director, says: “The Xaar 128 printheads are central to our product because of their ability to jet UV ink, and also because they can be easily incorporated into a small and lightweight printhead unit. As a consequence, Xaar technology is playing a major role in the Wallpen printer’s success.”

The whole unit is fairly compact and should fit in a mid-size car. It can be set up by one person in just five minutes. You can find more details on the Wallpen at https://wallpen.com/.
